His Holiness Gyalwang Drugchen Rinpoche

Picture
His Holiness the Twelfth Gyalwang Drukpa, Jigmed Pema Wangchen is the supreme head of the Drukpa Kagyü lineage of Tibetan Buddhism.  The Gyalwang Drugchens, like the Dalai Lamas, are considered to be emanations of Avalokiteshvara (Chenrezig), the Buddha of Compassion.
His Holiness was born in northern India in 1963, while his parents were on pilgrimage in Tso Pema, Rewalsar, a sacred place of Padmasambhava, during the festival and a major ceremony of lama dances and a holy feast celebrating Guru Padmasambhava's birthday.  He received his name, just after his birth, from His Holiness Dudjom Rinpoche.  "My name, Jigmed Pema Wangchen, was given by the holy master Dudjom Yeshe Dorje, with his traditional congratulations and divine blessings.  Ever since then I am blessed and entirely protected by him and Guru Padmasambhava forever."  Officially recognized by H.H. the Dalai Lama and H.H. the 16th Karmapa, he was enthroned in Darjeeling in 1967.

His Holiness' teachers include Kyabjé Thuksey Rinpoche, Kyabjé Dudjom Rinpoche, His Holiness the Dalai Lama, Kyabjé Trulshik Rinpoche, Kyabjé Bairo Tulku Rinpoche, and Pawo Rinpoche.  He has re-established a home for the Drukpa Lineage in exile at his monastery in Darjeeling and Kathmandu.  He oversees many monasteries in this tradition in Ladakh, Tibet, Bhutan, Nepal, Sikkim, and the Far East, and now has centers in the West.  Also, he founded the Druk White Lotus School in Ladakh, India, an award-winning environmentally friendly institution that provides a blend of traditional and modern education for the children of Ladakh.  Rinpoche speaks excellent English, and his teaching is noted for its directness, frankness, and freedom from convention.
